Mexican Law Enforcement Accused Of Firing On U.s. Border Agents - los Angeles Times

We had units there in an unmarked vehicle close to the international boundary. After the shots were fired, the official said, there was a verbal exchange between our federal law enforcement and the Mexican agents, and there was an apology. With border tensions rising sharply this year and thousands of Mexican and Central American minors crossing into the U.S., some experts predict more such international incidents. It's becoming more than normal, said James Phelps, a border and domestic security professor at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, adding that such incursions usually happen only once every two or four years.

Demonstrations In Ferguson Raise Critical Questions - Yahoo News

Levine said on Thursday that the letter "contained blatant mischaracterizations and did nothing to address the antitrust issues in Dollar General's proposal." Dollar General, the largest U.S. dollar store operator, alleged that it had been led astray by Levine in talks on a potential buyout, notably during a meeting on June 19. In response, Family Dollar said representatives of Dollar General "stated that they were not interested in pursuing a strategic transaction at that time." Dollar General had said in its offer that it was prepared to divest up to 700 retail stores to get regulatory approval for the deal, the same percentage that Dollar Tree had proposed. Dollar Tree made an $8.5 billion cash-and-stock offer for Family Dollar on July 28, to fend off growing competition from Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Dollar General.

In Striking Down Alabama Abortion Law, Judge Focuses On South's Culture (+video) - Csmonitor.com

In another unique legal argument probably aimed at a rural and mostly Southern audience, Thompson compared abortion rights with the Second Amendments right to bear arms noting that a law that allowed only two gun shops in Alabama to remain open would take a heck of a lot of explaining. The slew of recent abortion rulings is part of a broader debate that most legal experts say will have to be settled by the US Supreme Court . Given that its largely former Confederate states openly testing the extent to which abortion is supported at the federal level, states rights will probably be a factor in such a decision. In the meantime, Thompsons ruling was widely hailed by abortion rights groups, which said that it supports their contention that the new state clinic laws infringe on the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision.
